If you live in the western portion of the United States of America, then Pillars and Tongues will probably be performing within earshot of your home this month. Scan the dates below and mark your calendar. This is the first Pillars and Tongues tour in the US since the release of Lay of Pilgrim Park, and it comes not a moment too soon. Rumor has it, they have already finished recording the next album.

Pillars and Tongues are a beautiful experience live. They have performed over 250 concerts in the past three years throughout the U.S., Canada, France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. Each performance weaves composition and improvisation into unique golden braid. Be there… see it… and understand why they have been invited to tour with Bonnie “Prince” Billy and at other times perform with artists such as Nick Cave + Dirty Three, Bill Callahan, Sir Richard Bishop, Daniel Higgs, Chirgilchin, and many more…

Empty Cellar is heading down to Big Sur this Saturday (July 3rd) with Secret Seven for the first annual Vinyl In The Woods record fair at the Henry Miller Library, co-sponsored by (((folkYEAH!))).

Described by the promoters as an all-day vinyl fair with a listening party, live music, surprise Rock’n'Roll movie, food and drink, and holiday weekend fun. It should indeed be… fun.

Henry Miller Library, Big Sur, CA
July 3, 2010, 11 am – 11 pm
$3 donation at door

In a press release, Magnus Toren, the Library’s Executive Director explained his longstanding love of vinyl as motivation for the event:

“When I was 14 years old in 1968 vinyl was the only way to buy music. I learned the English language through reading liner notes and translating lyrics because I was very interested in music. It’s nostalgia on one level and it also makes me think it’s too bad that young people now don’t get to have that.”

Babaloo, a Cuban food truck from Carmel Valley, will be providing eats, alongside many DJs and musical performances by Mystery Lights (Salinas) and SF’s Seventeen Evergreen.

Confirmed vendors at the fair include (in alphabetical order):

* Amoeba Records (SF/LA)
* B Music/Finders Keepers (LA)
* Burger Records (Fullerton, CA)
* Drag City (Chicago, IL)
* FutureRecordings (San Diego, CA)
* Vinyl Revolution (Monterey, CA)
* Vinyl Isle (Morro Bay, CA)
* Origami Vinyl (Los Angeles)
* Kemado/Mexican Summer (Brooklyn)
* Metamusic (Santa Cruz)
* Secret Seven (San Francisco)
* Empty Cellar (San Francisco)
* Plus many independent vendors too!

It will certainly be a rad time. If you are still need convincing, then check out this stirring promo vid:

Sonny Smith and the most ambitious project of all time…

SONNY SMITH: 100 RECORDS
April 9th – May 31, 2010
Opening reception Friday, April 9, 6 – 9pm
Gallery 16
501 3rd St
San Francisco

Live music by
Sonny and The Sunsets
and
The Sandwitches

In Gallery 16′s words:

Gallery 16 is pleased to welcome San Francisco based artist, musician and playwright Sonny Smith to his first solo show with the gallery. 100 Records is a dauntingly ambitious project that bridges his interest in art, music and dramatic form. Smith invited 100 artists to produce artwork for the record covers of fictional bands. Smith concocted the personas of each 100 fictitious bands, then wrote and recorded two hundred songs (the A side and B side) for each. All of the original artwork will be on display as well as a jukebox that plays all two hundred songs recorded by Sonny Smith and other notable musicians. Artists include, William T. Wiley, Mingering Mike, Chris Johanson, Reed Anderson, Jo Jackson, Harrell Fletcher, Chris Duncan, Tucker Nichols, Paul Wackers and 91 others!

…and in Sonny’s words:

This is a year long project that began at the Headlands residency last march. I’ve written 100 songs for 100 record jackets hand made by a shitload of artists. Also there will be a handmade jukebox to play all the songs. there’s gonna be a Volume 1 limited edition box set put out by Gallery 16 available for sale with some limited edition reproductions signed by some of the artists. This thing is a sight to be seen. Later in the year there will be a volume 2, 3, 4 etc.. Which is exciting and I will tell you more about
that soon enough.

100 records, 100 artists, 100 songs, 1 year, 1 opening, 1 jukebox, 1 you, 1 me, 1 gallery. My birth year adds up to 1 btw.

This project incorporates all that i’ve ever been working on all these years: literature, visual, music, collaboration, fictional characters.

It is my year of Individuation: those processes through which differentiated components become integrated into stable wholes. Coincidentally I couldn’t have completed this oneness without lots of people’s help.

So don’t be afraid to celebrate this oneness of one-of-a-kind togetherness/oneness with five or six glasses of (free) wine.!!!

…and in the immortal words of Endless Nest:

THIS RULES!

Keep your ear to the ground for beautiful limited edition 100 Records releases from Turn Up! and Empty Cellar records.

Mark Trecka & Beth Remis of Pillars and Tongues on Tour with Elephant Micah!
Saturday April 03rd 2010, 11:50 am
Filed under: Indian Summer Music,Live Music

On the heels of a European tour with Pillars and Tongues, Mark Trecka took to the road as the drummer for Dark Dark Dark‘s SxSW tour, and on the heels of that tour… Mark and Beth Remis of Pillars and Tongues are departing on an East Coast tour with one of our favorites, Elephant Micah! Indian Summer, of Endless Nest, hosted Elephant Micah in San Francisco last month at a truly bomb show, and this tour promises to be just as bomb… if not bomberer?

Mark and Beth will be performing Mark’s solo material and a few stripped down versions of Pillar’s tunes. It will rule even though they are totally neglecting us on the west coast.
