Mad Score!

A few weeks ago, I woke to the sound of a dude peddling his wares outside of my San Francisco apartment window. Turns out said dude was an international tape collector, Rick Foust, who had to get out of town quick and could not take his tapes (200-300 rare 70’s tapes from Thailand and India). We get to chatting and the plot thickens; he is the same collector who contributed several of the key tapes that Sublime Frequencies used to compile their recent Saigon Rock and Soul: Vietnamese Classic Tracks 1968-1974 release. After looking at the first layer of tapes in the first box, I knew that this was one of those once-in-a-lifers, so I ran to an ATM and bought the whole lot.

So, what does a dude with hundreds of Thai tapes and no time to listen to hundreds of Thai tapes do? He gets sane and donates them to his favorite international music collective, Dublab! Stay tuned for some awesome Dublab curated Thai tape compilations, courtesy of Rick Foust… wherever he may now be.

Empty Cellar & Secret Seven on KUSF 90.3 – listen to the Archives

If you missed Arvel (Empty Cellar) and Greg’s (Secret Seven) ten (60) minutes of fame on DJ Mashi Mashi’s show on KUSF 90.3, and are dying to hear the sneak preview of the unreleased track “Song of Songs” from the Sandwitches upcoming Duck Duck Goose EP, then you can listen to the radio show on the KUSF archives. Our spot is the third hour of the show, but you should listen to the whole thing because DJ Mashi Mashi rules. Hopefully we didn’t sound like nervous fools. Also, the real stars are Goose, Dottie, and Esme (featured above). Oh, and major props to David from Ukiah who sang the Grateful Dead’s “Standing on the Moon” to me over the phone to win a copy of Secret Seven’s In a Cloud compilation.

R.I.P. Mercedes Sosa “La Negra” (July 9, 1935 – October 4, 2009)

One of the most beautiful voices and greatest champions of social justice of the last century passed away this morning. Joan Baez is said to have been so moved by her presence that she once dropped to her knees to kiss her feet. Rest in peace Mercedes Sosa.

“I was killed a thousand times. I disappeared a thousand times, and here I am, risen from the dead. . . . Here I am, out of the ruins the dictatorship left behind. We’re still singing.”
— Mercedes Sosa

7″ Inches Review & Podcast + Joseph Childress Live at Yoshi’s (SF) + Sandwitches 7″

I have recently come to realize that bloggers might be one of independent music’s greatest allies. Not that we didn’t kind of already know; but really, I am not sure that we could have gotten the word out about “The Two Sides of Tim Cohen” if it wasn’t for all the help we received from music writers online. As we were preparing to release of the Joseph Childress / White White Quilt – Split (Water Tower) 7″, we came across several great blogs that feature 45’s & 7″ records exclusively.

Here are just a few of the ones we found (there are many more out there):
7 Inches
I Think I Hate My 45s
Dereks Daily 45s
7 Inch of the Day
7 Inches from the Underground

We are fortunate enough to be currently featured on Jason Dean’s 7 Inches blog, for the Water Tower Split. You can read Jason’s review of that record here. He also invited us to do an interview for his podcast. You can access that podcast at this post. We are honored. Hopefully I did not make a fool of myself in the interview.

Speaking of Joseph Childress… He will be playing tomorrow (Sun 9/20) at Yoshi’s Songwriter’s Sunday with two others, Roberto Miguel & Mason Lindahl. Check it out if you can.

8:00pm-Midnight
1330 Fillmore at Eddy
San Francisco
$5

…and speaking of 7 Inches, the Sandwitches finished recording their acoustic 7″ e.p. for Empty Cellar Record at the Garden Chamber this week. It will be titled Duck, Duck, Goose. They will be mixing the record with engineer/producer Wymond Miles when he gets back from tour with the Fresh & Onlys. Can’t wait to hear it!
